About the director
Robin Bierschenk earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Music Education from the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music (CCM). She has been the director of the Turpin High School and Wilson Elementary Orchestras in the Forest Hills School District since 2005.
She taught band and orchestra in Houston, Texas, for 12 years before coming back to Ohio and working as a teaching assistant at CCM for three years while earning her master’s degree. She later taught both orchestra and band at Kings and Wyoming school districts and at Ursuline Academy.
Mrs. Bierschenk’s interest in music goes back to her elementary school days in North Canton, Ohio, when she was fascinated by Leonard Bernstein’s “Young People’s Concerts” with the New York Philharmonic — a program renowned for introducing an entire generation to the joys of classical music. She was also influenced by Bernstein’s “Norton Lectures” which made complex musical concepts accessible to a general audience.
In the 1970s, she was one of the original members of the Canton Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps, a world-class competitive junior drum and bugle corps based in Canton, Ohio. The Bluecoats are the current DCI World Champions, so she is one very proud alumnus!
Mrs. Bierschenk is an accomplished pianist and saxophonist, and has taught and played string instruments for many years. She has training in every band and orchestra instrument, so the Bierschenk home has quite a collection of musical instruments. She is also a member of the Cincinnati May Festival Chorus, which gives numerous performances each year with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Cincinnati Pops.
She has many special experiences as a teacher, but two stand out. One of her groups was selected as the Outstanding String Orchestra in Texas; and another group was invited to perform at the distinguished Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago.
Mrs. Bierschenk and her husband Ken live in West Chester, and they like to visit their daughter Julie who lives in Chicago.
